Lion of Judah - 4
Emblem of the Ethiopian royalty, the Lion embodies the highest human qualities: courage, dignity, nobility, sovereignty and resistance.
This design by One One One pays tribute to the monument erected in Addis Abeba in 1930 — before Haile Selassie's crowning. It was stolen by the Italians and brought to Rome in 1935. There, during and official ceremony in 1937, Zerai Deres — a young Eritrean who could not bear seeing this Lion of Judah teared away from his country — attacked the Italian guards before he himself was killed.
The Lion of Judah has been restored to Addis Abeba in the 1960s, after long negotiations between Ethiopia and Italy. Haile Selassie attended the new inauguration ceremony in military uniform as an homage to Zerai Deres.
" The Lion of Judah shall break every chain and give us the victory again and again "
